Tales of Broken Glass

Today, I learned a new skill – cutting glass. My friend Nancy (of MacLaren Glass) gets swamped in the summer – it’s tourist season at the market, so she could use some extra help. I could use the money, so voila! I learned how to cut glass today. I managed with only one wound – a teeny shard under a fingernail. Yeouch!!! No blood, but the pain! It sheds new light on shoving things under fingernails as a torture method.

Sometime later this week I’ll be moving out of Sudsy, and into a larger space that I’ll be sharing with Nancy. I think it’ll be cool (it’s in the same building) but I’m also sad to leave Sudsy behind. It’s been such a haven for me, my own little space.

That’s all the news that’s fit to print. I think we’ll have quiche for dinner. It sounds comforting.

La la la

Today was awesome!! The weather was fabulous! It was sunny! Okay, enough with the exclamation points already!

Anyway, today *was* fabulous and sunny and soap sales were good. The market had lots of people wandering around, and lots of them stopped and bought soap. I got to say hi to Betsy, who also bought soap. Everyone wave at Betsy!

Ooh, and I traded soap for a massage (true fabulousity) and for one of my friend Nancy’s super-cool new dichroic glass bug pins. They are very, very cute, and if you need a Mother’s Day gift you better get down to the market tomorrow and get something for her. Shop local! Yeah!

Today was such a good day that I am going back tomorrow, my first Sunday this year. I usually don’t go on Sundays, but since I’m working for myself for the time being… the siren call of potential earnings is calling me back tomorrow. I hope the weather cooperates.

I’m starting to get into a groove of what sells and what doesn’t. It pains me to admit that the scents that are my favorites are not what sell the best… so I have to resist the urge to make them all the time in favor of some disciplined soapmaking – if I keep bestsellers in stock all the time, sales will continue to go up as the tourist season comes on.

Life is pretty good right now.

“Make Soap Day” didn’t quite work out yesterday. I fought with Quanta, trying to make it work, much to my frustration. It didn’t – DH had to fix it up for me when he got home from work. I did manage to finalize my e-newsletter for Claire Luna and sent it off to my testers. I also set up and formatted a shopping cart for DH to accept credit card payments for the wireless service we’re offering at the Activspace where Sudsy is located.

After DH got it all set up, I did manage to update my website with a bunch of new soap scents (although some aren’t all that new, I hadn’t gotten around to photographing them). I still need to photograph the new packaging for the lotion and creams…

So today is “Visit My Shrink” day AND “Make Soap” day as well as “Go to the Post Office” day. I’ll get going soon.

Sudsy Love

Yesterday was a good day. (Not that today was bad.) My soap workshop (otherwise known as Sudsy) was really a mess. I am not the most tidy person in the world. I have a tendency to leave stuff piled around, stacked up, left out, or in a general state of disarray.

DH moved in my last cabinet out of storage, so now I really have no excuse. We set up my fax machine also, so I can accept faxes now. I bought a desktop organizer at Fred Meyer and now all my sheets of labels, and receipts are neatly sorted. The last cabinet is home to my Jafra business supplies and other stuff that should stay protected, because it has doors on it. I dug out my business card stock and finally updated my business cards with my new cell phone number and my fax number and address… my business cards were terribly out of date! Now I just need some for the Jafra side and I’ll be set.

At any rate, the workshop looks freakin’ fantastic and I’m not embarrassed to have guests. My dad is in town for a conference and I showed him. He thought it looked great.

Soap Joy

A new wholesale customer of my soap, in Maryland, emailed me today to say the soap was selling well in her store. Rock on! I also just dropped off an order to a local customer — you can find my soap at the Corbett Country Market should you be out that way. It’s apparently been doing well there also.

I really need to find some more wholesale customers. I’m shy about cold calls, but I think I need to learn to be more bold. I clearly have a great product here, the packaging is lovely, and it would be an asset to other boutiques and shops. …thinks bold thoughts…

I can do this. Grab life by the horns and give it a shake!
