Last Day

Today was my last day at the VBC. I was going to post the name of the company today but I got an email from another agency (I guess you could call them a temp agency, but I think they place more consultants) about a 2 month job doing data entry (for almost two bucks more an hour than I was making) at the VBC. I’m not sure that I can because of the rules about length of time a contractor can work there, but if I remember correctly I think I can squeeze three more months out of them.

So, we’ll see. Two months would definitely buy me more time to find another job and if it’s full-time, it would double my pay and we could save half of it (and I’d have two more months beyond that to find work).

Cross your fingers.

Haven’t heard anything from the company I interviewed with on Monday. I sent off an application for a job in Corvallis today. I’m not really ready to move back to Corvallis yet, but we would for the right pay. I’ve been away long enough to feel slightly nostalgic.

Women and Politics

Salon has an interesting article detailing a report by the National Council for Research on Women. Read the article here (you have to watch a commercial, yadda yadda).

The gist of the article is that the Bush Administration has been removing or changing information (or distorting it, in some cases) relating to women’s issues and equality, found on government websites.

You can read the original NCRW report here: MisInformation Clearinghouse

The unexpected

Always expect the unexpected. Did I mention I *hate* the unexpected?

I’m that person who is obsessed with planning. What am I doing today? Tomorrow? Next week? Next year? I love to plan ahead, think it through, etc.

Yesterday I got a call right at the end of the market, from a company I applied to through Jobdango. I got through a brief phone pre-interview, and the lady askeed me to come in today. So I did. It went okay, I guess. We’ll see how it goes.

But in the meantime, I can’t plan what I’m going to be doing in the near future, because now I don’t know. Snarf.

We did good at the market, though. That was cool.

Soothing the beast

Yesterday I didn’t go to work. I took a “personal day,” which translates to me telling them I’m not coming in and working extra hours the other days to make up the lost pay.

I went instead to an Earth Day fair at Portland Community College, the Sylvania campus. One of my customers (I have the world’s BEST customers!) invited us to come, to sell soap. We did really well! I also had a great time, it was fun having a different crowd — not that I dislike the crowd at the market, but the college thing was fun.

We also went to hear Barbara Ehrenreich speak at Oregon State University last night. This of course involved having dinner first at our favoritest of favorite restaurants, Oasis (it’s next door to WinCo, for you Corvallis folks). I have missed Oasis badly.

Barbara E. was great. She speaks like she writes — funny, articulate, spot-on with her observations. It was great.

I’m feeling better. If I have to be unemployed for a while, I’ll think of it as a vacation. An unpaid, how are we going to pay our bills vacation, but time off nonetheless.

Could Be Worse

Lots worse…

The idiot temp agency produced a temp to replace me — after telling the managers that they didn’t have any viable candidates. Gimme a break, they are an enormous agency.

Anyway, the gal they sent over has previous experience with the VBC — she had actually been a permanent employee a few years back, but left when the financial meltdown hit. She was surprised at how friggin’ cheap the company has gotten. I was afraid I was going to have to spend the next two weeks training a total dimwit, but she’s smart and funny and a lot like me, so I think we’ll get along fine.

I am FURIOUS with the temp agency though. Temps aren’t supposed to discuss wages between themselves, but once I figured out she didn’t like the agency any more than I did, I asked her what they’re paying her. It’s $2.00 an hour MORE than they are paying me. Why? Her asking salary was higher than what I said I’d take (I was desperate and had no idea what the going rate for a secretary was), so they gave me the shaft. To say that I am violently angry is an understatement right now. I can’t even say anything to them because I don’t want to get her in trouble (I like her and screwing her over wouldn’t make me feel better).

And you want to know what the REAL pisser is? They’re paying her what they paid my predecessor… so they’ve been collecting the same amount from the VBC for me as they did for my predecessor, and pocketing the difference. Those f&*&! a$$holes.
