I think I’m destined to be terminally sleep deprived this summer. I’m so tired! My grandfather’s health has really deteriorated in the last two months and he was in intensive care earlier this week, so I’m driving down to Grants Pass to visit him (and my grandma) this weekend. I don’t know if I can miss Saturday at the market, though, because we really need the money for our moving expenses. I suspect I’ll be driving down on Sunday, leaving really early in the morning, and coming back really late at night. Yawn.

But… my (maternal, not the one we’re visiting) grandmother’s second husband went into the hospital last night, and was sent by Life Flight to Seattle (they live in Pt. Townsend, WA) with two aneuryisms (aortic? something like that). The doctors don’t know if he is going to make it.

This is all so awful. I don’t want to have to decide between going to see my mom’s mom or my dad’s dad. Life kinda sucks that way.

And I’m so damned tired. I’m not sleeping well and I haven’t even made a dent in either the sewing or the website I’m supposed to be doing. Argh.

The Eww Factor

I have no idea where I first learned about this. History class? Biology? That entomology class in college? Dunno, but it was one of those things that stuck with me, along with drizzling honey on a wound (sucks all the water out of bacteria, apparently).

Anyway, it was with great interest that I read this article today: Maggots Make Medical Comeback.

I know. All together now: EWWWWW!!!

But as the woman quoted at the end of the article says, if you’re facing amputation, sign me up for the bugs. Although her comment about them moving around did make me a little queasy for about a minute. It’s the creepy crawly factor.

But really… if it works, it works. (But it’s still EWWWW!)

Too Much At Once

Occasionally I seem to bite off more than I can chew. I think this is one of those moments.

So the soap studio is definitely a go. We’ll paint it and install a counter/work area later this month.

We also found a new place to live. While I’m really excited, it also means moving, soon.

We’re taking the soap to a Renaissance Faire the third weekend in August, which means costumes. Buying them straight out is pretty darned expensive (a shirt and vest for DH and a hat for me totalled up to something AWFUL) so I’m sewing mine myself. I’m starting to think I’ve lost my mind. I’m making the bodice from this pattern (although not NEARLY so fancy, no trim and a plainer cloth) as well as the skirt–also not so fancy, in cotton instead of what looks like satin. I’m not planning to wear a farthingale either (that’s “hoopskirt” to the rest of you). I’m making the dress from this pattern because done up in light fabric, it makes a nice chemise (that’s long night-gowny thing to the rest of you). I’ve made that pattern before — the picture in the top right (the chick holding the candle) is the same pattern I used for my wedding dress — imagine it all in ivory, though, not dark colors.

Anyway, I can look forward to many hours at the sewing machine. This is in addition to the many hours of soapmaking (because this faire gets a lot of traffic, so sales could potentially be great — thus the need for more soap), the many hours of website-making (I promised a crafter friend a website and need to deliver, SOON), and many hours of moving out of cruddy apartment and into nice studio on NW 23rd, and many hours of upgrading soap studio.

I’m tired already. What am I thinking?? I think I’m crazy.
