Purple Hair

My little sister (she’s 13) wants to color some of her hair purple. Not all over, but a few sections kind of like highlights. While I think it’s going to be great fun doing it (I’m in the process of seeing if I can make an appointment to have a professional do it for her) I’m totally jealous at how easily she got our mom and dad to agree. I’m 25. When *I* was 13 (and 14 and 15 etc until I left home) my parents were adamantly against any kind of weird hair color changes. I could do a natural-looking red, but definitely NO purple or blue or green or bright red or pink. I guess they figured if I colored my hair purple one day, the next thing I’d come home with fifteen piercings, a boyfriend named Spike, and be shooting up heroin or something. Obviously they’ve mellowed out quite a bit.

chs-rosettes.jpg I’ve been having fun lately making these crocheted rosettes lately. They are so fast to whip up and so cute! I plan on attaching safety pins to the backs of them and giving them as gifts — I’ve seen things like this selling in boutiques, etc. for $10 or more! I think they would make nice little stocking stuffers. You can find the pattern in the crochet section of the Lion Brand website. Any yarn will work. I’ve been stubbornly resisting the current poncho craze (I saw LEG-WARMERS in the store the other day too! What is this, the worst fashions of the 80′s all over again??). But I’ve seen patterns for some nice shawls made with crocheted granny squares, and that is tempting. Granny squares are quick to make also, and seems like it would be fun.

I think it’s time for a visit to a craft and/or yarn store…

Palm Trees In Winter

Not content simply to plan our first “real” vacation (as in, getting on an airplane and staying somewhere nicer than Motel 6) for someplace continental, last night I bought two plane tickets to Maui. For our sixth anniversary, we will be spending New Years on a tropical island. Needless to say, given how crappy the weather is today (and is only likely to get worse) I can’t wait.

I am SO excited. Only 68 more days until we leave…

Oh, and I found a great weblog I’ll be adding to my list: Girly Blog (for now, anyway). A kindred spirit, she writes about things I care about too.

I suspect I will be talking a lot about Maui, so maybe I should make a new category… Looking forward to this vacation is seriously going to carry me through what is a VERY busy time both and work, home, and with the soap business. Maui…

A good rant

It occurs to me I haven’t had a good rant in a while. I just haven’t had very much to rant about, or at least nothing I’d want to put on the internet for the whole world to see. I live by the motto “Never put anything on the internet you wouldn’t want your mother, your grandmother, or you boss to see.” That would include overly personal rants about family members and work…

We’ve been taking the bus to work most days, and it never ceases to amaze be the variety of people who ride the bus. Since we live in NW Portland, we get more than our fair share of Louis Vuitton bag-toting, Ralph Lauren-wearing, $150 hairdo-sporting fashionistas along with the slightly cleanliness-challenged and the boring normal non car-driving folks such as ourselves. Things that bug me: spoiled high school students showing their friends all the “cool” ringtones on their phones. Women applying their makeup on the bus — sheesh, get up fifteen minutes earlier so we don’t all have to be witness to your grooming habits! Bus drivers who careen around corners with a bus full of people standing up (Dominoes anyone?).

Then, there’s side effects to the new happy pills I’m taking. For the first week, it was headaches, nausea, and flu-like symptoms. Then I think I got a real bug, because I felt REALLY awful (and now one of my co-workers has it). The nausea/headache/flu-like symptons wore off, but now I’m back to the sweating. There are few things more annoying than having hot flashes like a pre-menopausal woman. I feel like I need to carry a towel with me. I *think* it got a little better (I had a sweating problem with Prozac, when I took it a few years ago) but I don’t remember. At least we’re going into winter. It was unbearable during the summer.

While I’m at it, I’ll throw out the complaint that it really sucks to find a cute pair of shoes only to discover the store doesn’t have them in your size!! Argh.

I feel better already.

Zen gardening in the litter box

I’ve been dying to use that line *somewhere* after I thought it up earlier this week. We have cats with extrememly picky potty habits, and without going into too much detail… let’s just say that they like their litter scooped regularly and nice and smooth. I was rather ill earlier this week, and in a fit of fever while doing litterbox duty I was hilariously reminded of those little desktop sand garden things. I get weird when I’m ill…

Over the weekend, we got all the painting finished on the soap workshop. We’re calling it Sudsy… The ceiling is a light purple, the floor is dark purple, and the walls are a barely purple, mostly white. It looks nice. We should be able to move some stuff in this weekend since I have the keys to the place now. Woohoo!!

I met my new doctor last Friday. She was pretty nice, very helpful and sympathetic. I appreciated that. I have a prescription for some new happy pills to go along with my old happy pills… an SSRI, so of course I get to feel like I have the flu for at least a week (although I think I also have a real bug as well, because I felt extra crappy yesterday and DH is sick too). Hooray health insurance. Although, the meds give me hot flashes… I feel like my mom, all fanning myself and feeling flushed.

It’s Friday. Thank you Lord.
