We are seriously thinking about moving into a studio apartment in NW Portland. This wouldn’t seem like a major decision, until you consider that we have lived in increasingly LARGER places every time we move, not smaller ones (except for the two months we spent at my inlaws, but that room was about the size of the studio minus the kitchen).

The essential problem is that we have too much stuff. We have a few kitchen appliances we never use, clothes we never wear (but we might! it’s that frugal mentality), books I won’t read again (time for a major Bookcrossing drop), tablecloths and napkins for a kitchen table we don’t have, and way too many knicknacks. It’s time to pare down, lighten the load, etc. With me working full-time, and DH working part-time and helping me along the rest of the time (he runs errands for my soap business too) neither of us feels like cleaning up the apartment. With three rooms and a kitchen, things get out of hand very quickly. When he starts working full-time, I imagine this situation only getting worse.

I think with only ONE room and a kitchen (since we won’t be living with the soap anymore), if we both devoted 15 minutes a day to it (especially at the same time) we should be able to keep it looking sharp. I like having a tidy place to live, but I don’t like the amount of time it takes to keep our current living space neat.

I think we’ll make it work. Besides, the place we’re looking at is on NW 23rd, about the BEST location ever. Plus, it has an enormous kitchen (the place is half kitchen), with a full size stove and fridge, AND a dishwasher AND a garbage disposal. Does it get any better than this? I don’t think so.

Mmmm. I’m ready.

    You can do it!

It’s really hard to do it all at once like that, but many people are prompted to de-clutter by a move. It’s especially nice because you can pick up a thing and ask yourself: “Do I want to move this?” It’s a very motivating question.

Good luck to you! I’m an old hand at this, so write me if’n you want encouragement.
